How to Drive Your Christmas Tree Home Safely

More than half of Americans prefer a real tree over a fake one for Christmas. However, one of the biggest challenges of getting a real tree is having to transport it home. It can be a difficult task if you don’t have the tools and don’t have an idea of what you are doing. Fortunately, the team at BG Automotive is here to help with some tips to make your Christmas brighter.

Below are some of our key tips for Christmas tree transport to keep you safe and your car free of damage.

Bring Items for the Job

You will need a blanket, tarp, or sheet of some sort to provide a barrier between your car and the tree. You don’t want to lay the tree bare on your car roof or truck bed because its needles can scratch your vehicle and its sap can hurt your car paint. Next, you will need to bring a rope, bungee cord, or other forms of the durable strap. You will use those to wrap the tree onto the car securely. Last but not least, don’t forget to pack gloves to protect your hands.

Don’t Forget the Netting

If the service is offered at the tree farm (which they usually are), please have the tree netted before loading it onto your vehicle. Not only does it protect the tree, but they keep the needs and limbs tucked for the ride home. It makes the loading process less messy and easier to manage.

Proper Positioning Is Important

The tree stump should always face the front of the vehicle. When you drive, the force of the wind will push the tree into its natural resting state to limit damage.

Give It a Tug Before Driving Off

Once you fasten the tree onto your car, give it a strong tug to see if it is 100% secure. The last thing you want is for your tree to be sent flying off your car. Not only is this dangerous for you, but it is just as dangerous for others on the road.

Drive Slow

This one is obvious, but people will understand if you are going slightly under the speed limit. Take your time driving, and don’t speed.

Follow Up with a Wash and Wax

Once you safely make it home and get your tree in the house, don't forget about it clean-up. Get rid of any loose needles or sap left behind. We recommend running your car through the wash to make sure it is all gone.
